How they met
Nicole: Like a lot of couples now we met on Bumble. It definitely doesn’t sound thrilling! But we both were knocked out of our socks while swiping.
Schaune swiped right first and was hoping that we’d end up matching. He appreciated my witty bio and loved that I was a huge baseball fan. He also says that my picture stopped him in his tracks. We matched the next day when I was swiping. I was discouraged and in a swipe left mode. I was trying not to go too fast because I had a feeling that I might come across a profile I liked. Sure enough, when I saw his picture I couldn’t swipe right fast enough!
I let him sweat it for about five minutes before I messaged him. He responded immediately and we texted constantly for a couple of days until we met in person. When I saw him on my front porch I knew I was done.
How Did he ask?
Nicole: Our proposal was so sweet! Schaune proposed in our living room – which was the first place we laid eyes on each other. He ran into problems getting his hands on the ring because of covid and the delays surrounding that. He was very traditional about it. He asked my dad’s permission beforehand. He chose the ring without too much input from me, and without my friends or family’s help.
When he proposed he called me by my full name and I couldn’t hold it together anymore. We both knew pretty early on that we were each other’s forevers, but there is something special and emotional about the actual proposal and wedding ceremony.
Planning a wedding during COVID-19
Nicole: Our first date was in December 2020. We found out right before Thanksgiving that it was going to be postponed because the county increased restrictions. Schaune’s entire family was traveling from out-of-state, so we were scrambling to try to get answers on “when.” It was such a huge disappointment! Here we were less than a month away from the day we’d been dreaming of, only to have the rug pulled out with no idea of when it’d be rescheduled.
In between Christmas and New Year’s, we found out that the county would be opening up again in January. Our venue called to get us on the books for a new date, and we rescheduled for January. Our families were elated!
We ended up getting married on our original date in an intimate ceremony with just our immediate family. It was beautiful! My mom and grandma worked hard to give us a memorable wedding. My grandpa performed the ceremony and spoke eloquently. He made it a point to keep the vows traditional and of import without repeating the ceremony twice. It couldn’t have been more perfect!
With our celebration ceremony, it was slightly smaller because of the restrictions in place, but it didn’t feel smaller. We felt the love and support from each and every person who was there with us. Of course, there were people unable to reschedule their travel, and that was a tough pill to swallow. We’re grateful for the people in our lives who could celebrate with us! We’ve been told since then that it was the best wedding anyone had been to!
And really, we got the best of both worlds because of covid – we were able to have the small, intimate ceremony and the larger, “traditional” wedding.
Any other advise?
Our advice is to make your spouse your favorite. Be their number one fan in everything. Cheer them on in all their endeavors. Admire all their qualities. Embrace their quirks. See past the faults and irritants. When all is said and done, this is your life partner, and it’s the way his eyes sparkle and his nose crinkles when he laughs at something you say that will matter most.
